Day 6 - Driving like the wind...

We got up and took a 3 hour drive to Birmingham, Alabama to visit the Sports Hall of Fame. After a very average burger the night before the environment inside the car was matching the weather outside it - a strong southerly wind! When we arrived at the sports hall of fame and interestingly for me - of the 1,000 or so sports people who had memorabilia displayed inside - I knew about 3 of them! Funny as most of the trophies had "World Champions" of various sports but it was all US based - but I guess that is a conversation I will have for the rest of my life with people whilst living in the US ;o). Some of the sports people I did recognise were:

Joe Louis:

Carl Lewis:

and clearly this guys was a sporting legend!

Any trip to Birmingham would not be correct without visiting the Civil Rights Institute - however - as we were to find out - it is closed on Mondays ;o(. So we jumped back in the car and took to the road for the long trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. This took us about 5 hours so by the time we got to the motel it was late and that was the end of the day!

We have booked ourselves into another Days Inn just outside New Orleans as they have been
pretty good for the money thus far - this though one seemed like a pack of starved, stinky ferrets had been living in it for a week. Highlights were a hole in the bathroom door (looks like a fist hole), no toilet rolls, dirty sheets, dirty carpets etc etc. On the plus side it was only $50! We kinda expected this but to balance things out we have splashed out a bit and booked a hotel for the center of New Orleans tomorrow night - check it out - http://www.placedarmes.com/ - looks lovely and it is right in the heart of town so should be cool! Also we only have to drive 15mins to get there and not the 8 or so hours we have driven today. The weather is also predicted to be very warm and bright tomorrow so fingers crossed for a great day!

Until then - stay safe, play fair, always look both ways when
you cross the road and always eat your greens.
