Day 33 - Is there a god? and is he in Salt Lake?!

After being chuffed as punch that SKYPE pulled through and we had a near perfect connection this morning - we said a very Happy Birthday to my nan!! It was 6:45am though so I'm not sure if both of us were fully awake and we may have mumbled through the whole experience - ha ha.

So we were on the road before 9am - something that has not happened before! We made sure the wine we had purchased in Napa was buried in the trunk in case snooping eyes in Utah took offence (it is a dry state you know). It was just under a 4 hour drive to Salt Lake City so we got in around 1pm. Now Salt Lake is fairly new to the tourism trade as previously the whole state has been suspicious of the east coast - this is down to the high population of Mormons that live in Utah - they are a timid bunch and don't like outsiders.

In the centre of Salt Lake City is the Temple square. This is the world headquarters of the Mormon church. It sure does show they are not short of a buck or two!

The Assembly room....

A mere visitors center....

This is the inside of the visitors centre!

This is the temple - built in 1893....

The Tabernacle - Where the Mormon choir and orchestra operate from....

I guess it goes some way to show how much money the Mormon church must filter, the huge skyscraper in the background is their administration centre and head office - its massive!

The original log cabin inhabited by the first settlers in Salt Lake....

After trying to avoid the many 'tour guides' i.e. Mormons that show you around a bit and then try and sign you up! (although lets say i avoided them - Steph was not so lucky!), we then drove out of the city to find the Salt Lake itself!. It only took about 30mins as the thing is the size of a small ocean.
A few shots of the lake....

This one is all Stephs - she is getting all arty with her camera!!

We drove about another 3 hours south towards the national parks of Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef and then onto Monument Valley. We made it about an hour outside of the parks before tiredness set in and we stopped for the night in Richfield, Utah.
We need to find a garage in the morning as the car is vibrating something chronic above 60mph so we will look to get the balancing and tracking done - its all fun!!
